Shaping Hearts in Gel Pen

I did this quick gel pen drawing as a diversion from the large paper cut installation I’ve been working on since last week. I need a change of focus and had been dying to do a bit of drawing. While I don’t love Valentine’s Day, I do love creating artwork with hearts. Yes, I know it’s cheesy.

The drawing is listed for sale in my Etsy shop. It would make a lovely gift for your favourite valentine every day of the year.

Mega Etsy Shop Update

Over the course of this week I’ve been adding a whole bunch of new inventory to my Etsy shop.

Those metallic gel pen drawings combined with paper cut work are now in the shop under a brand new section of Drawings.

These two small altered book pieces recently came back into my possession, and they are marked down along with all the altered books in my shop.

I will no longer show any of my old altered book work and would really love to find them all a “forever home”.

Geometric gel pen drawings

While hanging around in my studio during Culture Crawl this past weekend I decided to work on a few gel pen drawings so visitors could see how I work. The first one I started sold before I could even finish it because someone liked it as it was, and I was okay with the drawing’s unfinished state. I was happy a few of these doodles found new homes on the weekend because they’ve been an experiment for me.

The circular one pictured here is the second of these drawings I began over the weekend, but wasn’t able to get very far with it until yesterday. I like making shapes with these doodles, and this one in particular resembles the twinkling crystalized surface of a planet.

The second drawing is one I’d originally created for the show I have up at Kafka, but there wasn’t room for it in the end. It was an experiment in exploring a shape other than a circle.

I really want to clear out the backlog of inventory, including owl altered books, and a few paper cut pieces from last year. Use the coupon code STUDIOSALE2014 to get the discount at checkout.

Made to Order Paper Cut Letters

After the recent paper cut commissioned letter C, and feedback from my newsletter subscribers, I’ve decided to offer paper cut letters made to order from my Etsy shop.

Etsy Shop Update: Meditative Drawings

Just a quick note about new work in my Etsy Shop. I decided to list for sale some of the many meditative geometric drawings I’ve been doing in recent months. At the moment there are only three, but by tomorrow I will add four more.

Each one is a unique abstract drawing using silver gel pen on a piece of 8.5″ x 11″ black cardstock.

Etsy Shop Update: Paper Cut Circles

I was recently feeling my output of completed artwork has slowed down, mostly because I am focused on larger projects that will take a long time to complete. So last week I decided to put the big projects aside and do a few small quick pieces.

I wanted to take the idea I’d explored with the heart paper cuts of creating my freehand designs within a set final shape. I chose a circle, and used a compass to draw an outline on the page. I created one white version backed with black paper, and one black version backed with white paper.

Both pieces are made from 8.5″ x 11″ cardstock and hinged to a contrasting piece of paper for framing. I’ve made them available for purchase through my Etsy shop.

Paper Cut Work: Black Hearted and Shattered

A friend suggested making paper cut hearts using black paper instead of red, and it led the designs in a completely different direction than the previous ones. I used triangles as the repeating shape within the form of a heart.

The first version has randomly cut triangles. I cut these freehand without a ruler or drawing anything other than the outline of the heart and lines to centre things on the page.

With the second design I decided to go with a more structured pattern of triangles working from a centre point within the heart. I drew lines radiating from the centre point and used a ruler to guide me as I cut. The end result makes the heart seem shattered. Take from that what you will…

Heart Shaped Paper Cut Work

Earlier this week I was feeling uninspired and not really sure what I wanted to do next with my paper cutting work. At the same time an upcoming project unexpectedly went on hold so I decided to take the time to play and explore ideas for Valentine paper cut pieces. This is something I mean to do every year but I never make time for it. I don’t have any special feelings about Valentine’s day, but I do love the colour red.

I’ve had this idea of a paper cut heart in my head and it felt so good to get it out. I drew the outline and freehand cut the design with an xacto knife. The heart is roughly 4.5″ x 6″ on an 8.5″ x 11″ piece of card stock paper.

Making time to play with a simple side project, and to work with coloured paper rather than white, was just the thing I needed to get inspired.

The paper cut heart is listed in my Etsy Shop as an unframed original. I plan to create a few variations of more hearts as I have time.
