Vancouver Timeraiser 150

My work will be part of the Timeraiser150 Vancouver happening on Thursday April 27th. I love this event because the work is first purchased from the participating artists and is then auctioned off to potential volunteers in exchange for their time. This year’s series of events are being held across the country in celebration of the 150th anniversary of Confederation.

Timeraiser is a party for social good, supporting artists and nonprofits. Here’s your chance to kickstart your art collection by giving back to your community. Bid volunteer time, not dollars, for original art by emerging Canadian artists. Bidding starts at 20 hours and maxes out at 150 hours. If a piece you love reaches 150 hours, anyone can match that bid and we’ll draw a winner at random from the max bids once the auction ends.

If you win, you have one year to finish volunteer hours and claim your piece of art. The best part? Volunteer with any nonprofit(s) you choose!

Recommended Artists to Visit During Culture Crawl Weekend

We’re a few short days away from the 20th Annual Eastside Culture Crawl, and everyone I know is in the midst of their last bit of preparation. The Crawl begins Thursday November 17th and continues until Sunday November 20th. It’s a terrific opportunity to see up close all of the amazing creators who live and work in East Vancouver.

This year you will find me as a guest artist in the studio of Propellor Design, at 1120 East Georgia Street which is location C5 on the Crawl map. I will be showing a mix of paper cut work, drawings, and a small selection of paper stitching. Come by and say hi!

1. Textile artists Michelle Sirios Silver and Stephanie Symns of Antipod Workshop located at 1610 Clark Drive or E19 on the Crawl map.

20th Annual Eastside Culture Crawl

It’s wonderful to realize the Eastside Culture Crawl is now in its twentieth year. The event has touched so many lives, connected artists, helped build careers, and inspired visitors. This will be my sixth year as a participating artist, and I’m proud to be a part of this distinguished community event.

Talking Art with The Eastside Culture Crawl

Talking Art is a series of artist talks and conversations to be held in advance of this year’s Eastside Culture Crawl in celebration of its 20th Anniversary. There are four events taking place between October 23th to November 5th, and each will pair two artists exploring a common theme. I’ll be presenting along with Heather Braun-Dahl on Sunday October 30th at 2pm. The full schedule in below.

Sunday, October 23 – 2pm

Material: Britta Fluevog and James Kemp
Britta Fluevog and James Kemp both balance experimental sculpture and installation works with the production of functional wares, each arising through the process of their material practices.

Saturday, October 29 – 2pm
Narrative: Haisla Collins and Richard Tetrault
Haisla Collins and Richard Tetrault are both engaged in individual and community-based works, each informed by strong narratives and realized in brilliant colour.

Sunday, October 30 – 2pm
Abstraction: Rachael Ashe and Heather Braun-Dahl
Rachael Ashe and Heather Braun-Dahl work in different media, but are brought together through form and line, with abstraction as a common ground and understanding.

Saturday, November 5 – 2pm
Place: Marcus Bowcott and Connie Sabo
Marcus Bowcott and Connie Sabo have both addressed place through environmental and social concerns, with intimacy and individuality that nonetheless speaks to the collective.

Talking Art is FREE and will be held at The Arts Factory (281 Industrial Ave). The series is curated by Francesca Szuszkiewicz.

Flight Path / Taking Flight at City Atrium Gallery

Flight Path / Taking Flight is a site specific paper installation I created for a show at the Gladstone Hotel in 2014 (view photos of it here). I am pleased to finally get the opportunity to display it in a local venue at City Atrium gallery in North Vancouver. The full piece is made up of six hundred paper crow wings suspended from wire in clusters, but for this current version I’ve included about half of the original number.

The sculpture was inspired by my fascination with watching large flocks of crows moving across the evening sky in spring and fall in their daily commute home to their roost in Burnaby. It feels like a rare opportunity to see so many birds together in one place.

Flight Path / Taking Flight will be on display at City Atrium Gallery until January 9, 2017.

Dates: October 17, 2016 to January 9, 2017
Times: Mon – Fri 8:30am – 5:00pm
Location: North Vancouver City Hall, 141 West 14th Street

Window Dressing 2016 at AMP Studio in Strathcona

For the month of October I once again have work on display in the window of AMP studio located at the corner of Hawks and Keefer. For the past year and a half my friend Valerie Arntzen has been hosting a different artist each month in the front window of her studio.

There are two pieces on display, the tyvek scroll I created in 2015 and a framed paper cut piece called, Kimono.

The studio is located kitty corner from the Wilder Snail in Strathcona, and the work will be up until the end of October.

Exhibition Photos of Hammer Cut Stitch Repeat

I dropped in on Hammer Cut Stitch Repeat last weekend to take photos and document the exhibition at Circle Craft gallery in the Net Loft on Granville Island. It was great to hear from the shop staff how well received the work has been. People are intrigued by the scroll installation, and can’t believe it was hand cut.

We had a terrific opening night at the beginning of September, and the tiny gallery space was packed all evening. We could not have asked for a better turn out.

New Iteration of the Flowerburst Installation

Hammer Cut Stitch Repeat opened yesterday evening at Circle Craft gallery, and one of the pieces included in the show is my Flowerburst installation. This is the third time I’ve shown the piece, and every time I present a new iteration. You can see previous versions at Mary E. Black gallery in Halifax, and at Hot Art Wet City.

Untitled

The original work was blue and last year I started making yellow and red ones to expand the work further. When I started putting things together for this installation I decided to incorporate some of the red pieces, and chose white foam core as the base instead of black. The photo below is a small part of the installation at Circle Craft gallery with one of the paper wearables positioned beside it. I love how these two works tie into one another in terms of colour and technique.

Untitled

It was a really terrific opening night for the show with many friendly faces in attendance, and plenty of enthusiasm for the work. The show continues until October 11th, so there is plenty of time still to see.

Hammer Cut Stitch Repeat at Circle Craft gallery

Hammer Cut Stitch Repeat is an exploration of repetition to achieve pattern and form in fine craft. With an emphasis on wearable art, Hammer Cut Stitch Repeat will bring together artists working in metal, paper, and textile. Individually, each artist’s practice has a focus on repeating one action over and over; something that would drive most people mad. For this group of artists, repetition becomes a vessel for creativity and it is within that place that they push themselves further to explore their craft.

Hammer Cut Stitch Repeat Invitation

Hammer Cut Stitch Repeat brings together the work of Rachael Ashe, Nell Burns, Su Foster, Patsy Kolesar, and Simone Richmond.

The show opens Thursday September 8th, 6pm to 8pm, and continues until October 11th, 2016. All of the artists will be in attendance and we would love to see you there!

Katami Designs Celebrates Two Years

My lovely friend Negar Katami celebrated the second anniversary of Katami Designs Gallery last week, and Boris and I were in attendance. It’s been slightly more than a year since the gallery started to carry my work, and I could not be happier with the care and attention they bring to my work.

You can see six new pieces in their current show, which will be up for the next six weeks. There are the four repetitive drawings I shared previously on the blog along with two small 3D paper cut pieces. I don’t have photos of those unfortunately, because I forgot to photograph them before delivering the pieces to the gallery. You’ll just have to see them in person.
