Hot Talks: Eastside Culture Crawl 3rd Edition

Once again I have organized an evening of talks by artists participating in the Eastside Culture Crawl on behalf of Hot Art Wet City.

Hot Art Wet City gallery presents the third annual Hot Talks curated by Rachael Ashe, in partnership with the Eastside Culture Crawl. Join us for an evening of informative and entertaining talks by artists, designers, and craftspeople on Wednesday November 9. The eight speakers represent a selection of the variety of artists participating in the 2016 Culture Crawl. Each speaker will present their work and share the process behind what they do in a short “Show & Tell” style talk.

Talking Art with The Eastside Culture Crawl

Talking Art is a series of artist talks and conversations to be held in advance of this year’s Eastside Culture Crawl in celebration of its 20th Anniversary. There are four events taking place between October 23th to November 5th, and each will pair two artists exploring a common theme. I’ll be presenting along with Heather Braun-Dahl on Sunday October 30th at 2pm. The full schedule in below.

Sunday, October 23 – 2pm

Material: Britta Fluevog and James Kemp
Britta Fluevog and James Kemp both balance experimental sculpture and installation works with the production of functional wares, each arising through the process of their material practices.

Saturday, October 29 – 2pm
Narrative: Haisla Collins and Richard Tetrault
Haisla Collins and Richard Tetrault are both engaged in individual and community-based works, each informed by strong narratives and realized in brilliant colour.

Sunday, October 30 – 2pm
Abstraction: Rachael Ashe and Heather Braun-Dahl
Rachael Ashe and Heather Braun-Dahl work in different media, but are brought together through form and line, with abstraction as a common ground and understanding.

Saturday, November 5 – 2pm
Place: Marcus Bowcott and Connie Sabo
Marcus Bowcott and Connie Sabo have both addressed place through environmental and social concerns, with intimacy and individuality that nonetheless speaks to the collective.

Talking Art is FREE and will be held at The Arts Factory (281 Industrial Ave). The series is curated by Francesca Szuszkiewicz.

Exhibition Photos of Hammer Cut Stitch Repeat

I dropped in on Hammer Cut Stitch Repeat last weekend to take photos and document the exhibition at Circle Craft gallery in the Net Loft on Granville Island. It was great to hear from the shop staff how well received the work has been. People are intrigued by the scroll installation, and can’t believe it was hand cut.

We had a terrific opening night at the beginning of September, and the tiny gallery space was packed all evening. We could not have asked for a better turn out.

The show continues until October 11th, 2016, so you have a couple more weeks to see it in person.

Hammer Cut Stitch Repeat at Circle Craft gallery

Hammer Cut Stitch Repeat is an exploration of repetition to achieve pattern and form in fine craft. With an emphasis on wearable art, Hammer Cut Stitch Repeat will bring together artists working in metal, paper, and textile. Individually, each artist’s practice has a focus on repeating one action over and over; something that would drive most people mad. For this group of artists, repetition becomes a vessel for creativity and it is within that place that they push themselves further to explore their craft.

Hammer Cut Stitch Repeat Invitation

Hammer Cut Stitch Repeat brings together the work of Rachael Ashe, Nell Burns, Su Foster, Patsy Kolesar, and Simone Richmond.

The show opens Thursday September 8th, 6pm to 8pm, and continues until October 11th, 2016. All of the artists will be in attendance and we would love to see you there!

Katami Designs Celebrates Two Years

My lovely friend Negar Katami celebrated the second anniversary of Katami Designs Gallery last week, and Boris and I were in attendance. It’s been slightly more than a year since the gallery started to carry my work, and I could not be happier with the care and attention they bring to my work.

You can see six new pieces in their current show, which will be up for the next six weeks. There are the four repetitive drawings I shared previously on the blog along with two small 3D paper cut pieces. I don’t have photos of those unfortunately, because I forgot to photograph them before delivering the pieces to the gallery. You’ll just have to see them in person.

Bloom: Ink Art Fundraiser at Nikkei Museum

Boris and I attended the Nikkei Museum fundraiser on Saturday evening, along with friends M.A. Tateishi, Arleigh Wood, and Christina Norberg. We four artists (not including Boris) had each donated a piece of art to their annual silent auction. I made a three dimensional arrangement of gel pen drawings in a shadowbox as my contribution (as pictured above).

Here is the piece hanging beside M.A.Tateishi’s spectacular painting in the auction show at the museum. Both of our pieces went home with lucky bidders.

I decided to bid on a piece myself, and came home with this fun screen print on wood panel by Yuriko Iga. I love the crazy colours, and all the patterns in the owl.

Work In Progress Website

You may notice changes and broken things around here over the next few weeks (hopefully less). Boris and I are currently messing around with my website as we merge the portfolio and blog. I’ve been running my portfolio on Behance Pro Site for the past couple of years, and as their service is about to be discontinued I am moving everything to WordPress and making changes to the template and structure. Fun times!

Things are a little bit broken in the meantime as I slowly get it all sorted out.

Window Dressing at AMP Studio in Strathcona

For the month of October I have work on display in the window of AMP Studio at Keefer and Hawks in Strathcona. My friend Val Arntzen hosts a different artist in her studio window each month, and has been doing this since the beginning of the year. Val calls the series of exhibitions, Window Dressing.

I brought a mix of framed pieces for the walls and a few small sculptures I haven’t shown in awhile.

I framed the concentric circle piece combining paper cut with drawing specifically to show in the window. I made it months ago and forgot about it, so I thought it was time it had other eyes on it.

My work will be up until the end of October but I’d suggest dropping by this weekend because Val is participating in First Saturday and will have her studio open to the public.

First Saturday Open Studios at The Leeway

On Saturday June 6th I will be hosting an open studio date at The Leeway in conjunction with First Saturday Open Studios. If you are curious to see what I’ve been up to so far or are interested in checking out the space at Emily Carr, please do come by.

I’ll be working on my paper cut installation exploring pattern design, and also the new tyvek installation.
