Bloom: Ink Art Fundraiser at Nikkei Museum

Boris and I attended the Nikkei Museum fundraiser on Saturday evening, along with friends M.A. Tateishi, Arleigh Wood, and Christina Norberg. We four artists (not including Boris) had each donated a piece of art to their annual silent auction. I made a three dimensional arrangement of gel pen drawings in a shadowbox as my contribution (as pictured above).

Here is the piece hanging beside M.A.Tateishi’s spectacular painting in the auction show at the museum. Both of our pieces went home with lucky bidders.

I decided to bid on a piece myself, and came home with this fun screen print on wood panel by Yuriko Iga. I love the crazy colours, and all the patterns in the owl.

Start With Art at Seymour Art Gallery

I’m thrilled to be part of this kid-focused art exhibit. I’ve contributed six pieces to the show, including collage and altered books I hope the kids will enjoy.

SWA FINAL

Join us for our 12th annual Start with Art exhibition at the Seymour Art Gallery. This truly unique exhibition focuses on engaging, inspiring, and encouraging children to appreciate, collect, and curate their own art collection. With an added emphasis on motivating children to create art, participating artists offer advice for budding artists, share childhood memories about art-making, and frequently spark the idea in kids that one day their work could be shown in a gallery too.

We’ve assembled a fantastic group of established artists who work in a diverse variety of media. The artwork is hung at “kids-eye-view” and is priced in a kid-friendly range, making Start with Art truly kid-centric.

Hot Art Card Trades From CARDED! at Hot Art Wet City

I love how The White Rabbit reproduced as a tiny artist trading card. I love it. This is a paper cut piece I created a few years ago for an Alice in Wonderland themed show, and I entered a cropped photo of it in CARDED!

Art Cards

The bottom photo are my favourite cards I manage to get in trade. Boris and I hung out at the opening for an hour and a half, chatting with people, and trading until we got the art cards we wanted. We’ve attended this show many times, but this was the first time I participated as one of the artists. It was so fun to trade away my own card, especially when people liked it enthusiastically.

CARDED! at Hot Art Wet City

I’m super excited to have a piece in this show, presented by Hot Art Wet City on Saturday April 2nd, 7pm to 11pm.

carded2016

The creators of Hot One Inch Action present CARDED! a one-night only show of art reproduced on trading cards. The work of fifty artists is presented on trading cards and made available for art lovers to collect and trade. These 2.5″ x 3.5″ cards are displayed on the gallery wall and the audience is offered the opportunity to buy random cards in mixed packs of five for $5. If you purchase a pack that doesn’t have your desired card, get into some fast paced trading action with the people around you. How bad do you want that card!?

Ten Artists One Paper

In September I shared the finished piece I created for an exhibition to celebrate the 10th anniversary of The Paper Place in Toronto. They invited ten artists to participate and provided everyone with the same Chiyogami patterned paper to incorporate however they chose into their work.

They started debuting the ten pieces on The Paper Place instagram account this week. The first one they shared by Judith Pudden is dramatically different from mine. I am very interested to see more of these pieces, because it will be a broad range of beautiful work.

Window Dressing at AMP Studio in Strathcona

For the month of October I have work on display in the window of AMP Studio at Keefer and Hawks in Strathcona. My friend Val Arntzen hosts a different artist in her studio window each month, and has been doing this since the beginning of the year. Val calls the series of exhibitions, Window Dressing.

I brought a mix of framed pieces for the walls and a few small sculptures I haven’t shown in awhile.

I framed the concentric circle piece combining paper cut with drawing specifically to show in the window. I made it months ago and forgot about it, so I thought it was time it had other eyes on it.

My work will be up until the end of October but I’d suggest dropping by this weekend because Val is participating in First Saturday and will have her studio open to the public.

Divine Lights Multi-Media Collaboration

My collaboration with Ben Z Cooper and Hfour made its debut at IDS West over the weekend. These are photos of the piece provided to me by Ben.

This is how the piece looks with the screen turned off.

Divine Lights collaboration

The work is made up of two intricate hand cut pieces of paper sandwiched between two layers of glass which overlay a digital screen playing an animation on a three minute loop. I wish I had a video to share of the piece to give a clearer idea of the interaction of the video and paper cut. It cycles through colour changes and has glittery play of light similar to reflections on water. It’s lovely and mesmerizing to watch.

I think the work was well received at IDS West and may be exhibited next at the Eastside Culture Crawl in November.

Exhibition Photos of Exquisite Lines at Katami Gallery

Exquisite Lines opened at Katami Gallery last Thursday evening, and there were about fifty people who dropped by (WOW!) I took these photos at the end of the night so I could share them with people who can’t be there in person. The show is a selection of recent drawings, hand cut paper work, and laser cut bamboo pieces based on my paper cut work.
