Persona @ Exposure Gallery

Persona @ Exposure Gallery

Ben Johnson and I have work in the next group show at Exposure Gallery, titled Persona. The theme for the show is Portraits/Self Portraits, and it opens this Friday March 16th. This will be the last show at Exposure for a few months as they have been forced to relocate from their current space due to a huge rent increase the gallery can’t afford.

I will be gallery sitting on Sunday March 18th, from noon until 5pm if you would like to drop by for a visit – or to entertain me throughout the day. Bring snacks. 🙂

The NV wrap up

The above photo was taken in Gastown, Vancouver, with a Vivitar Ultra Wide and Slim toy camera.

I’m really glad Zak invited me to work with Foo Associates at Northern Voice this past weekend. I don’t think I would’ve attended otherwise because my experience last year didn’t leave me “wanting more”. I would’ve missed out on a lot if I hadn’t been there.

I felt last year was great socially, and interesting because I was “thrown” last minute onto a panel, but lacking in the kind of content I’d actually paid for. This year was still very social, but because of my role as “Foo Associates representative”, brought me into contact with many new and interesting people instead of just chatting with friends. I was definately more interested in this year’s speakers, and made a point of not opening my laptop and (mostly not) shooting my camera during sessions to divert my attention. An open laptop in the audience usually seems to mean surfing/chatting/photo editing is going on, and I didn’t want to fall into it this year like so many others I observed.

Zak and I led a morning session on the first day called “Photo-Blogosphere-Meatspace-Mashup.”
The idea was to document different information related to blogging, such as the year people started blogging, number of blogs kept, and so on. We threw out some ideas, as did the audience, and then found a spot to create human graphs using the twenty or so participants. The results were fun, and though we hoped to explore this further during the conference, weather and space issues were against us. It’s an idea I’d like to try again, if I can figure out a good way to bring together interested bloggers.

I never did get further on the second day with my diptych series of conference attendees and their equipment, as mentioned in my previous blog entry. But again, I definately want to explore this further, now that I have a better idea of what works well and how best to shoot it.

All in all Northern Voice was a great source of inspiration, knowledge and social interaction.

The above photo was blogged on the front page of Utata today, along with a wonderful write up by Greg Fallis. Greg has been a long time Flickr friend, and I’m always pleased when he stops by my photo stream with a thoughful comment about my work. I am very pleased with his written accompaniment of this photo. It makes me long for a new red bike, a warm sunny day, and a joyride around the seawall.

Laundromat

File feature

I think it was October when I submit my series of laundromat photos to File Magazine, and they were immediately accepted for publication. The series just went up on the File site today, and I am very happy to have this group of shots seen here by a wider audience.

Holga Show at the Photomedia Center

Photomedia Center - 2006 Holga Show

Just over a month ago I submit a selection of my photography to an open call for Holga photos at the Photomedia Center. I’d actually figured I had little chance of getting in because there are so many people shooting with holgas these days and the competition was fierce. It means a lot to me to have my efforts pay off and be lucky enough to have one photo included in the final selection of the show. Please check it out, because I think they did a fantastic job of bringing together an excellent selection of work.

Over fifty international artists were selected from an open call for work by the Photomedia Center. Sixty works, all taken with a Holga camera, are represented in this exclusive online exhibit, sponsored in connection with Light Leaks Magazine. In the hands of skilled image-makers, this plastic toy marvel has produced some unexpectedly beautiful results.

A direct link to the show can be found here.

A little birdy

I forgot about posting this photo to my blog. I was contacted a few months ago through Flickr regarding the use a photo of Yuuki for a cell phone ad compaign. I was a little surprised they wanted this because it’s not really a great shot and the image quality is poor, but apparently it was perfect for their campaign. I gave the go-ahead, and the above image is the final version of the ad.

The new found fame hasn’t completely gone to Yuuki’s head, though he is saying he will charge for autographs…

I decided to submit my photos to two of the upcoming themes at Jpg Magazine. If you’re interested in voting, click on each photo and it will take you to the Jpg site, but you must be a member to vote.
