I hit the ground running in early August, just a few days after I returned from our two month sabbatical I started a two month artist residency at MakerLabs. The Tools for Women residency is a new offering they started this year to encourage and foster more women to use the space. There are cohorts of four people from diverse backgrounds starting each month, with the first four weeks spent on classes, and the rest of the time is for exploring, experimenting, and developing skills.
My main focus has been on learning to use the laser cutter, and testing various materials. The first few photos are details of the scribbles I laser cut from Canson paper, just to see the results. It would be so nice to iterate an idea and not have to do it by hand every time.
My second session of materials testing was to cut a few of the same scribbles from coloured acrylic. The colour choices were limited because I was using whatever MakerLabs happened to have on hand in the store. I’m happy with these two pieces, and feel they work well in the colours and materials. I really want to make larger ones.
I like the layered shadow and colours the cast by the transparent fluorescent green scribble. It’s such a great affect.
I have a couple more weeks remaining of the residency, a few more sessions with the laser cutter scheduled, and more material tests to tackle.
A few days before I left town towards the end of May the team from Paper-Oh came by the studio to do an interview with me about my work. Watch the video below. Thank you to Wade, Andrea, and Eder for all their hard work on this.
Paper-Oh is a sketchbook brand local to Vancouver, and they produce beautifully designed books with high quality paper for all of your sketchbook needs. I’ve been using them myself for the past couple of years.

Nikkei National Museum is pleased to present its ninth annual BLOOM party and silent art auction on Saturday, June 10, 2017. This is the museum’s main fundraiser, to support exhibits and educational programs related to the history and culture of Japanese Canadians. Get your tickets here »
I have contributed a framed paper cut piece to the silent auction. Inspired by the Kimono theme of this year’s fundraiser I chose a Japanese textile pattern of cherry blossoms, and hand cut the design from black card stock. The photo above is a detail of this piece.

We’re a few short days away from the 20th Annual Eastside Culture Crawl, and everyone I know is in the midst of their last bit of preparation. The Crawl begins Thursday November 17th and continues until Sunday November 20th. It’s a terrific opportunity to see up close all of the amazing creators who live and work in East Vancouver.
This year you will find me as a guest artist in the studio of Propellor Design, at 1120 East Georgia Street which is location C5 on the Crawl map. I will be showing a mix of paper cut work, drawings, and a small selection of paper stitching. Come by and say hi!

It’s wonderful to realize the Eastside Culture Crawl is now in its twentieth year. The event has touched so many lives, connected artists, helped build careers, and inspired visitors. This will be my sixth year as a participating artist, and I’m proud to be a part of this distinguished community event.
This year I have partnered with the inspiring multi-disciplinary team of Propellor Design and will be a guest artist in their studio. I am thrilled to be invited to show in their space because I am inspired and excited by the work they create. Find us at 1120 East Georgia Street, east of Glen Drive.
Visit my page on the Culture Crawl web site to see a preview of some of the selected work I’ll be showing. I hope to see you here.
