Spring Art Supply Giveaway

It’s spring cleaning time in the studios of many East Van artists, and we’re getting together on May 9th to swap or giveaway unwanted supplies.

It’ll be exactly like a garage sale but everything is free.

Drop by AMP studio located at 800 Keefer Street in Strathcona, and help us find new homes for unwanted (but still viable) art supplies. At this time I have no idea what type of supplies will be available, so please drop by in person. You’ll get to meet local artists too!

Artist in Residence at The Leeway

I’ve got exciting news to share, so make sure you’re sitting down while reading this. Ready?

This summer I’m going to be spending lots of time at art school, just not as a student. I’ve been chosen as the Artist in Residence for the summer term of The Leeway at Emily Carr University.

This means I get a studio that is located away from my home (for the first time ever), and I have access to the space and all sorts of wonderful resources for four whole months!!!! I’ll be working on a big new project and getting to do community outreach events from The Leeway, including a talk, an open studio, and maybe even a workshop.

I’ll be sharing what I’m up to in the studio here on my blog as usual, and also over on The Leeway blog.

The residency begins on May 1st and ends August 31st. I can’t wait to get started!

Patterns of Space at Mary E Black Gallery, NS

Patterns of Space opens this week at Mary E. Black gallery in Nova Scotia. It’s an exhibition of my paper cut work alongside the crocheted lacework of Catherine Thompson.

The invite created by the staff of NSCCD looks pretty cool with the combination of our two very different types of work together.

Patterns of Space invitation

I won’t be at the exhibition in person but I’m hoping the gallery will share photos once the show is installed. Patterns of Space opens April 9th and continues until May 24th, 2015.

Purely Paper Exhibition Photos

The opening reception for Purely Paper last Thursday evening was a packed affair. I was pleasantly surprised the show drew a large enthusiastic crowd to the North Shore to see the work.

Here are a few photos of the exhibition (mostly so my mom can see it), to give you an idea of what it looks like. It’s a good mix of work by the five participating artists – Joseph Wu, Connie Sabo, Mehran Modarres-Sadeghi, Anyuta Gusakova, and me. It’s a beautiful show and I could not be more pleased to be a part of it.

Kirigami Demonstration at Cityscape Gallery

I’ve been invited to demonstrate paper cutting as an activity during the North Shore Art Crawl this Saturday at Cityscape Gallery. I’ll be teaching visitors how to create simple symmetrical kirigami designs through cutting and folding, exactly like the examples I’ve included here.

I was doing research into spring-themed designs and came across these ones for sakura. Of course I had to make one of my own.

It’s been a couple years since I last participated in First Saturday, an open studio day that happens every month with a varying list of excellent artists. This time I will be a guest in the studio of Reilly Lievers, a fabulous photographer, musician, and film maker. You can find us working away at 25 Gore Avenue, between noon to 5pm.

Come say hello, and see Reilly and me in action as we work on our stuff before your very eyes.

Vancouver Outside The Box: Toronto Design Offsite Festival

If you happen to be in Toronto this week go visit Vancouver Outside the Box at 1082 Queen Street West. This is a window installation featuring work by a collection of work by Vancouver artists (including me), and is curated by Dear Human.

Here’s a photo Dear Human shared on instagram yesterday. It’ll be our only chance to see it because none of us will be in Toronto ourselves.

The display is part of the Toronto Design Offside Festival and continues until Sunday January 25th. You can view my work in the display in more detail by taking a look at the blog posts I wrote about the work in December. Read them here and here.
