Workshop: Creating Altered Books

I’ve scheduled a second class for the year, and this time you can learn how to create art from old books. It’s been more than a year since I last taught this class, so be sure to grab your spot.

This five hour workshop is an introduction to examples and techniques for transforming old books into one-of-a-kind pieces of art. There is an unlimited potential for creating interesting work by altering books through cutting, folding, rolling, collaging, etc. This course will demonstrate a selection of techniques and provide a starting point for creating work of your own. The goal will be to complete one finished altered book by the end of the workshop. Please bring at least two old books you would like to work with, one for experimenting, and one to make a completed project.

Visit Eventbrite for further details and to register for the class.

Scenes From An Altered Books Workshop with the CBBAG

On Saturday I taught an altered book workshop in partnership with the CBBAG. We had a terrific space in the Creekside Community Centre with large windows giving us a lovely view of the seawall and plenty of natural light. It’s been about three and half years (I think) since I last taught this class because my focus has been on paper cutting over the past intervening years. Thank goodness it is like riding a bike, and I remembered everything I needed to pass on to participants.

I’ve included photos of some of the work created during the class, most of which was still a work in progress by the end. It was a fun group to work with. My favourite part is how people take my techniques and come up with their own ideas.

Thank you to the CBBAG for inviting me to teach this class and taking care of the administrative tasks around running the workshop.

Now the question is: should I teach this class again…?

Upcoming Altered Book Workshop with the CBBAG

On March 3rd I will be teaching an altered book workshop in partnership with the Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild (CBBAG) at Creekside Community Centre. Scenes From a Paper Cutting Workshop in Fort Smith, NWT

I had the pleasure of spending five days in Fort Smith NWT and teaching a paper cutting workshop there this past weekend. I was hosted by the Northern Life Museum and Cultural Centre as part of their annual Summer Splash Festival. It was a two day class to introduce students to a few different techniques with the goal of completing a multilayered paper cut design in a self contained shadowbox by the end.

We started with a few small projects such as kirigami from origami paper and then working with pattern templates and card stock to get a little cutting practice in. I think everyone created beautiful pieces, and then they were ready for the big project.

I brought the rabbit prototype I had made earlier in the summer along with an abstract sample (I haven’t shared), and then helped guide people on their own layered project. The photos below are some of the different work in progress by various participants. It was gratifying to see these come together in the end. I didn’t manage to get photos of everyone’s work.

It was a great experience teaching this two day workshop. I hope to organize one somewhere in Vancouver later this fall.

I’ll share more photos from Fort Smith in another blog post.

Creating A Paper Cut Sample for a Workshop

I’ve been invited to teach a two day workshop on paper cutting at an arts festival happening out of town in mid-August. This will be the longest class I’ve taught in years, so I needed to do some planning and prototyping in preparation. The overall project is going to be a multi-layered paper cut shadow box scene, which I’m hoping will be an inspiring challenge for participants.

I’ve made two samples for the workshop. The leafy scene with the grey rabbit pictured here is the one I think will grab people’s attention, but I’ve also made one that is abstract with simple repeating shapes.

It was lovely to create this little scene entirely from paper. I had to pull it together before I went on holiday at the beginning of July because they needed an image to promote the workshop, and I needed to be clear with myself about how to teach the participants. I can only seem to do that through making a physical thing.

This is the fourth or fifth time I’ve made work with a rabbit. I’m starting to think I should make more work like this…
