Specimens: Fish and Turtle

Specimen - fish

Both photos were taken in the J.F. Driscoll Family Stair of Wonders at the Royal Ontario Museum.

I was in Toronto to visit my family at the beginning of May. I hadn’t been home in almost two years, so I thought it was time to pay a visit. One of the things I was really looking forward to during my stay was checking out the brand new renovation at the Royal Ontario Museum.

Specimen - turtle

It was wonderful to see some of my old favorites in new displays, especially the dinosaurs. The last time I saw them, the displays looked very dated with 60’s style murals and lots of dust everywhere. The old bones look much more impressive in their new home.

Weekly collage part II

Rachael Ashe: collage

I’m working on a series of collaged pieces on wooden cradle frames. This is the second in the series, and I posted about the first one last week. For now I’m not sure where I am going with these works or whether they will have a common theme. I’m mostly just doing them for enjoyment.

Things to check out this weekend:
Got Craft?
The Spot Prawn Festival
Aberthau Potters Club Pottery Sale – Saturday, 10 – 4 pm, 4397 W. 2nd Ave. (Jericho Beach area)
Soundwalks – Baba Yaga’s Journey: A Storytelling Soundwalk

Pitt Lake

Taken with a Contax 35mm SLR, using crossprocessed Sensia film. The full set of my photos taken at Pitt Lake can be seen here. As my friend Neil commented, the weird colours make it seem like I visited a martian landscape.

If you are a toy camera shooter like me, you may want to submit to the latest call for submissions at Light Leaks magazine. The deadline is this Saturday April 26th.

Also coming up this weekend, on Sunday April 27th, the annual Worldwide Pinhole photography day. Just in case you needed an excuse to break out your pinhole camera, or pick one up for the first time. ๐Ÿ™‚

What if it all means something

This week I skipped my moleskin sketchbook and went straight for one of the wooden cradle frames that have been wasting away in my art supply box for months. I started with a page torn from a book about the sketches of Leonardo da Vinci, and slowly built the composition around it with the hat wearing male figure and butterflies. Everything else was added as I looked around my apartment and found more long neglected items I’d collected with the intention of using them for “something.” I still need to do some work on the sides of the piece, and I think I will add a bit of colour to the background using watercolours.

As pictured below, I made a huge mess all over the living room floor by the time I was done.

Contemplation

self portrait, pinhole camera

Taken with a pinhole camera, while sitting in the window of Brioche on West Cordova Street in Vancouver. They have really yummy soup, and very delicious looking desserts I have yet to try.

Yesterday evening I went on one of my favorite Vancouver walks with a friend. When the water is at low tide, it’s possible to walk along the beach all the way from Kitsilano to Jericho. It is really peaceful down there, with wonderful views of the city and the North Shore. Try it sometime.

Somewhere on the way to somewhere else

Somewhere on the way to somewhere else

Ten good things:
1. Taking the whole weekend off.
2. Unexpected invitations to a very yummy brunch with nice people.
3. A whole three days of glorious sunshine.
4. Finally buying my very own copy of “The Iron Giant”.
5. A mini road trip out of town with the help of a loner car from Ariane.
6. Watching osprey, ducks, and hummingbirds fly.
7. Seeing garter (or is it garder?) snakes in the wild for the first time in ages. (My sister had one as a pet when we were kids.)
8. The weather being warm enough to take out my parasol, wear flip flops, and eat popsicles.
9. Shopping with Mandy in unexpected places.
10. Shooting what I hope will turn out to be a kick ass roll of film.

Something to dance about

LCC Dance Festival FINAL

Last week I was contacted through flickr by a design company in the UK. They were interested in using one of my self portraits on a promotional poster for a dance festival in Leicester. The best part about it was they were willing to pay for the usage. Too often people or companies initiating contact through flickr do so in a very unprofessional way, and want things for free, so I tend to ignore these sorts of things. I’m glad this time the situation has worked out so well, and I love the final version of the poster.

It amazes me to realize a photograph I spent about ten minutes setting up and shooting has paid off so well. I actually took it to cheer myself up at the time.
