Sale: Metal Prints at Etsy.com

I’ve decided to put all of the metal prints I have listed in my Etsy shop on sale. The regular price is $45, now on sale for $35. This does not include shipping. Below are detail shots of two of the eleven prints.

Metal print - Stranded balloons detail

Metal print - posing crow detail

Each is a handmade aluminum metal print mounted on a wooden cradle frame. Size: 7″x 7″ with an image size of 5″x 5″. These prints are made using a heat transfer printing process, and the imagery are my photos taken with a holga camera.

Beautiful Shipping Crates: Vevex

Only once before have I had to ship large works of art to a gallery too far away for me to deliver by hand. This was at the end of 2007 for a group show in Los Angeles. I didn’t really know what I was doing and despite my best efforts both pieces, unframed metal prints that were 24″ x 24″, were damaged in transit. Despite a few dents they still made it into the show, thanks to quick repairs by the gallery owners.

The experience made me nervous about any future participation in shows outside of Vancouver but my desire to build a well-rounded art CV outweighs my fear of damaged art.

In my preparations for an upcoming group show in San Francisco (which I will blog about in more detail closer to the opening), I decided to go all out and have a proper shipping crate made for the framed print I needed to send. Kirsti had come across the work of Vevex and really liked the look of their shipping crates. I decided to give them a try myself, gulping a bit about what it might cost me.

They were able to give me a quote by email based on the measurements of my work, and even sent me back a detailed spec sheet I could use to figure out shipping costs. The crate took two days to build, which was much quicker than I’d expected, and was delivered right to my door at an additional cost ($12). (This was awesome for me because I don’t have a car.) I was really impressed with the quality of the crate and almost felt it was a shame to send it off. The whole thing cost me $70. I consider it an investment in future shipping needs for my artistic career.

The crate comes lined with ¾” polystyrene foam and allows some room for additional wrapping. A large plastic bag for wrapping is an additional $3.00, and bubble wrap is an additional $1.50.

The crate is certified for worldwide shipment and comes with a collection of ‘fragile’, ‘glass’ and ‘this side up’ labels.

It is really beautifully made. I kind of want more of them… 🙂

Inspiration enters at the border between hard work and laziness

From Free Will Astrology:

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): “It’s better to be clumsy than clever,” says an ancient Chinese book called *Poets’ Jade Splinters,* “better plain than affected, better crude than weak, better eccentric than vulgar.” That’s a good prescription for you to use in the way you live your life in the coming days, Leo. Here’s another observation from the same text that should also be helpful: “Inspiration enters at the border between hard work and laziness.” That suggests you’ve got to work hard and discipline yourself in order to earn the right to inspiration, but often the inspiration flows in when you’re goofing off or giving yourself some slack.

A Little Bit of News

Walking back the way we came

The problem with looking back at what I was up to this time last November is realizing I was a much more productive artist then, and I was actually selling work. It’s easy to focus on the things I’m not happy with when comparing to last year and I think it’s a counterproductive thing to do. I need to reflect, but not compare so much because a year later often means different circumstances that factor into artistic productivity.

And on that note, I do have a few things to be pleased about with my work. I have one photo published in the current issue of Geist Magazine that doesn’t seem to have translated well into print but in print it is nonetheless. I’m also pretty sure I have some work in the Plastic Photographer – Low Tech Photo Show , opening Thursday at 2221A Artist Run Centre. I say “pretty sure” because the person I talked to about whether or not my work had been accepted wasn’t very clear with me. I’m planning on checking out the opening regardless. 🙂

Thanks to Ariane getting all up in the templates for my site and tweaking the CSS today, things are looking much more polished around here. Gone is the annoying horizontal scroll bar that appeared whenever I used an image 500 pixels wide. Yay – and thank you Ariane!

I have added an etsy page to the site where you can directly view some of the items in my shop. You still have to go to Etsy to purchase, and it doesn’t allow me to showcase everything, but it’s a start. Hopefully soon I will have another announcement about other places you can purchase my work online.

Vancouver Yogathon, Four Days To Go

Kristi

Just four more days until the Camp Moomba Yogathon and Blissfest I am participating in at Thunderbird Stadium. I decided to re-post something about this because my original entry may have been missed a few weeks ago when the RSS feed wasn’t working.

The yogathon means a 108 minute long session of yoga for the thousands of people who participate. The funds raised through the event go towards sending children whose lives have been affected by HIV/AIDS to Camp Moomba, to give them a chance at a normal summer of fun. This will be my third time participating, and it’s something I look forward to taking part in every summer if I can. Last year we did the yogathon in heavy rain, which was not something I was expecting to enjoy as much as I did.

If you can please help me reach my fundraising goal. At the moment I am 76.67% of the way there (according to gifttool).

Something to dance about

LCC Dance Festival FINAL

Last week I was contacted through flickr by a design company in the UK. They were interested in using one of my self portraits on a promotional poster for a dance festival in Leicester. The best part about it was they were willing to pay for the usage. Too often people or companies initiating contact through flickr do so in a very unprofessional way, and want things for free, so I tend to ignore these sorts of things. I’m glad this time the situation has worked out so well, and I love the final version of the poster.

It amazes me to realize a photograph I spent about ten minutes setting up and shooting has paid off so well. I actually took it to cheer myself up at the time.

Photoduets

I’m having a tiny show of my work at Cafe Duma on Broadway. The show opens next Saturday April 5th, from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. I decided to go with a selection of the diptych images I’ve been putting together over the last few years, and I’m very happy with the how it has all come together.

I’m looking forward to seeing them hanging on the walls of Cafe Duma. You should come see. 🙂

Gathering

Gathering

The other day I made a fresh batch of small metal prints, and as of this morning I have listed eight of these for sale on etsy. My shop can be found at rashe.etsy.com, and I have photo prints available there in addition to the metal prints. If you’ve always wanted one, now is the time to buy because I have used up all of my supplies for now.

Three of the shops I have recently made purchases from on etsy, and recommend:
Blockpartypress
Photoglassworks
