Art Supply Giveaway 2017

It’s spring cleaning time in the studio, and on Saturday March 18th I will be part of the annual art supply giveaway with a group of artists in Strathcona. Drop by 800 Keefer Street to browse a selection of unwanted (but still viable) supplies. This is the fifth year my friends and I have held this event.

Everything is free because we just want someone to make use of the materials. At this time I have no idea what supplies will be available from each artist so come see for yourself. There’s always something for everyone, including things like textiles, papers, found objects, books, and more.

Meryl McMaster at Richmond Art Gallery

It feels like a rare and special treat to see an exhibition of a woman’s self-portraits taken seriously and presented in a gallery context, but such is the work of Meryl McMaster at the Richmond Art Gallery. The show features excerpts from three different photo series created over the past four years featuring Meryl as the central character, and also the canvas, for explorations on identity and the representation of indigenous people in art.

The images are strikingly precise compositions with a narrative thread flowing through them. Her use of colours, props, and natural light are spot on. I love this show so much  and left feeling super inspired. It’s been a few years since I last shot a self portrait myself, and the experience has me longing to pick up the camera again.

Confluence by Meryl McMaster continues at the Richmond Art Gallery until March 19, 2017. More details about the show here.

Unfolding Cloth Across Cultures at MOA

Despite the crazy snowfall on the weekend, Boris and I made the long trip across town to the Museum of Anthropology at UBC. We went to see Layers of Influence: Unfolding Cloth Across Cultures, which is an exhibition of textiles taken from the museum’s permanent collection. The focus is on textiles from a cross section of cultures to explore “clothing’s inherent evidence of human ingenuity, creativity and skill, drawing from MOA’s textile collection — the largest collection in Western Canada — to display a global range of materials, production techniques and adornments across different cultures and time frames”.

It’s a beautiful show full of inspiring pieces of work. I love this idea that people wear clothing as an external expression of their spiritual belief system, social status and political identity in many cultures, but feels less evident in our own. The show motivated me to continue embellishing my own clothes, to personalize them, and make them an expression of who I am. I mostly dress for comfort these days, and not so much for style. I wonder when that changed…

Three Cities at Grunt Gallery

I have visited this exhibition at Grunt Gallery twice since it opened a week and a half ago, because I love it so much. Three Cities: Prayer and Protest is an interactive paper cut installation made by the artist team at Mere Phantoms, which is Maya Ersan & Jaimie Robson. They created pared down miniature sets of Vancouver, Montreal, and Istanbul from white paper. Visitors to the gallery listen to soundscapes while using LED lights to project and play with shadows along the work and walls.

There are so many details to look at, and using the provided lights to project shadows on the walls helps visitors notice more of these.

The Monteal and Istanbul sets have beautiful churches, while the Vancouver set is filled with wild animals. They’ve captured important details about each city, like the Woodward’s W, and the tree that lives atop a building in English Bay.

The show continues on at Grunt Gallery until February 18th. Learn more about it here.

A Weekend to Buy Local, Buy Handmade, and Buy Art

There are so many terrific artists, makers, and craftspeople in this city and the Christmas season is the perfect time of year to support small business by buying locally made goods to give as gifts. This weekend there are studio sales and craft markets galore, so I thought I’d share my favourites.

Shiny Fuzzy Muddy is my favourite seasonal market because it is a highly curated collection of fine craft and art, bringing together many of my favourite artists in the city. It’s an excellent place to buy beautiful things for loved ones (or yourself). Check out Dahlhaus, Antipod Worskshop, and Westerly Handmade Shoes.

Heritage Hall, 3102 Main Street
Sat Dec 10th, 11am to 7pm | Sun Dec 11th, 10am to 6pm

Got Craft is also a highly curated market that has been around for ten years now. They are a larger market with more to choose from, but still focused on quality indie handmade work. Check out The Beautiful Project, Coconama Chocolate, and Fable Naturals.

Pipe Shop Building, 115 Victory Ship Way, North Vancouver
Sat Dec 10th + Sun Dec 11th, 10am to 5pm

Gam Gallery is presenting their third annual group exhibition & holiday pop-up shop, this year inspired by Pantone colour system. They invited artists to contribute works in colours from the collection to create a spectrum of hues through the gallery. Check out works in the show by Sandeep Johal, Caitlin McDonagh, and Trevor Van den Eijnden. The show opens Friday Dec 9th, 7pm to 12am.

110 East Hastings, at Columbia
Fri Dec 9th to Fri Dec 23rd.

EEK Studio Sale with artists Christann Kennedy and Gina Miller. It’s a great opportunity to visit artists in their studio, and purchase an amazing piece of art directly from the artists.

EEK Studio, 1888 Main Street, Unit E
Fri Dec 9th, 5pm to 9pm | Sat Dec 10th, 1pm to 5pm

Happy Shopping!

Post-Crawl Post Mortem

It’s a few days after the conclusion of Culture Crawl weekend and I am still sooooooooooo tired, and my brain doesn’t seem to be working very well. But I had a terrific weekend hanging out with the team at Propellor Design as a guest artist in their studio.

We had a busy weekend with over 1000 people dropping in to see us. Nik and I kept a tally of visitors on the studio chalkboard and it became a lovely piece of art all its own by the end of Sunday. It was great to see some familiar faces and introduce many new people to my work. I was pleased to have a selection of artwork find their forever homes, including the last of my laser cut pieces from a few years ago.

A huge thank you to Pam, Nik, and Toby of Propellor Design for hosting me in their studio. Watch the video above to see some of their lighting, work in progress, and materials of inspiration.

Recommended Artists to Visit During Culture Crawl Weekend

We’re a few short days away from the 20th Annual Eastside Culture Crawl, and everyone I know is in the midst of their last bit of preparation. The Crawl begins Thursday November 17th and continues until Sunday November 20th. It’s a terrific opportunity to see up close all of the amazing creators who live and work in East Vancouver.

This year you will find me as a guest artist in the studio of Propellor Design, at 1120 East Georgia Street which is location C5 on the Crawl map. I will be showing a mix of paper cut work, drawings, and a small selection of paper stitching. Come by and say hi!

Pattern Inspiration By Sarah Pike

I came across the beautiful work of Sarah Pike a few months ago on instagram. When I recently learned she’d be having a show in Vancouver I jumped at the chance to purchase one of her pieces. The mug is what I came away with after doing a super quick drive-by visit to her opening last week. Many pieces were sold within five minutes of the start of the show, which is amazing.

I love to have handmade things in my home as much as possible, and mugs are at the top of that list. This Japanese textile pattern is a favourite of mine and use it in my own work – paper and stitching both – so it’s pretty special to have this mug.

Sarah’s teapots are also pretty spectacular pieces of art with their hand stamped patterns and elegant shapes. One day I hope to acquire one of her teapots to go along with my lovely mug.
