Start With Art at Seymour Art Gallery

I’m thrilled to be part of this kid-focused art exhibit. I’ve contributed six pieces to the show, including collage and altered books I hope the kids will enjoy.

SWA FINAL

Join us for our 12th annual Start with Art exhibition at the Seymour Art Gallery. This truly unique exhibition focuses on engaging, inspiring, and encouraging children to appreciate, collect, and curate their own art collection. With an added emphasis on motivating children to create art, participating artists offer advice for budding artists, share childhood memories about art-making, and frequently spark the idea in kids that one day their work could be shown in a gallery too.

We’ve assembled a fantastic group of established artists who work in a diverse variety of media. The artwork is hung at “kids-eye-view” and is priced in a kid-friendly range, making Start with Art truly kid-centric.

Hot Art Card Trades From CARDED! at Hot Art Wet City

I love how The White Rabbit reproduced as a tiny artist trading card. I love it. This is a paper cut piece I created a few years ago for an Alice in Wonderland themed show, and I entered a cropped photo of it in CARDED!

The White Rabbit as an artist trading card

Art Cards

The bottom photo are my favourite cards I manage to get in trade. Boris and I hung out at the opening for an hour and a half, chatting with people, and trading until we got the art cards we wanted. We’ve attended this show many times, but this was the first time I participated as one of the artists. It was so fun to trade away my own card, especially when people liked it enthusiastically.

CARDED! at Hot Art Wet City

I’m super excited to have a piece in this show, presented by Hot Art Wet City on Saturday April 2nd, 7pm to 11pm.

carded2016

The creators of Hot One Inch Action present CARDED! a one-night only show of art reproduced on trading cards. The work of fifty artists is presented on trading cards and made available for art lovers to collect and trade. These 2.5″ x 3.5″ cards are displayed on the gallery wall and the audience is offered the opportunity to buy random cards in mixed packs of five for $5. If you purchase a pack that doesn’t have your desired card, get into some fast paced trading action with the people around you. How bad do you want that card!?

Artists in this show: Andrea Hooge, Andrew Ferneyhough, Aynsley King, Bryce Aspinall, Candy Hsu, Carelle Dunn, Chiara Ferrari, Chris Carr, Darren Dinh, Doug Savage, Erika Medina, Flavia, Gabriel Koenig, Gabrielle Ng, Gordana Ristic, Hailey Sato, Haley Smith, Hazel Cheng, Heather Gilbraith, Hryanskim, Ilya Viryachev, Jason Fielding, Jenn Brisson, Jennifer Chernecki, John Shigeta, Joy, Julia Iredale, Karyn Wong, Kathryn Mussallem, Kathy Moyou, Ken Rolston, Kim Nipp, Kimberly Parker, Kristian Adam, Kristina Kolosova, Mandy Lau, Marina Leclair, Megan Majewski, Michael King, Nada Hayek, Oliver Hine, Phresha, Quinn Lincoln, Rachael Ashe, Sean Moxley, Serena Inman, Shary Contrary , Vincent Truitner, William Weird and Yvette Tang.

Giraffes and Magnolias in Mount Pleasant

This beautiful new mural recently made an appearance in the Mount Pleasant neighbourhood. It’s the work of Ilya Viryachev, a concept artist and animator in Vancouver.

The mural is HUGE, stretching down an alley running south just off of 8th Avenue near Main Street. It’s bright, beautiful, and full of magnolias, birds, and giraffes peeking out of the foliage.

I want more murals like this, because I am greedy for high quality street art.

Encountering a Wonderous Installation of Paper

I had a wonderful busy weekend hanging out with artists, visiting galleries and studios, seeing art, and talking with artists over good food. It all started with a visit to the Museum of Anthropology to see (In)visible: The Spiritual World of Taiwan Through Contemporary Art.

As soon as we walked in my friends and I were all completely smitten with the Water Fairies Reproduction Project, which is the gorgeous installation pictured here created by Chiu Yu-Wen. It envelops the main hallway of the exhibition space beginning at the entrance of the show. It is made of a gauzy draped fabric and thousands of pieces of cut paper

We spent a long time looking at this piece from many angles, and enjoying the calm and peaceful atmosphere you experience while walking through it.

I am inspired by this piece because I aspire to make paper based installations on this scale. It also feels like a rare opportunity to come across work like this in Vancouver, because most exhibitions spaces don’t have the space or mandate to display installations on this scale or type.

(In)visible: The Spiritual World of Taiwan Through Contemporary Art continues at the Museum of Anthropology until April 3, 2016.

Scenes from Things In My Head by Gathie Falk

I caught Things In My Head, a show of work by Gathie Falk, on its second to last day at Equinox Gallery last week, and was so glad I did. It’s a show of everyday objects reproduced by Falk in various materials such as ceramic and papier mache.

I mostly took photos in the room full of piles of ceramic fruits, because I loved the colours, shapes, and repetition. Another room had things like shoes, dresses, and shirts.

It’s too late to see the show in person, but check out the exhibition photos on the Equinox gallery website. I am most excited about shows such as this that elevate craft to fine art.

Unique Work by Rachel Gourley

These are wonderful sculptures by Rachel Gourley taken at a show in Crafthouse Gallery on Granville Island. I dropped in last week to take a look and was wowed by her wonderful work.

Up close the works appear to be similar to glass, but they’re actually made from polymer clay. The pieces resemble wild forest fungus and sea anemone, combined with found natural objects like stones, and driftwood.

A Short List of Eastside Culture Crawl Artists You Should Visit

I think I already mentioned how thrilled I am to do the Culture Crawl this year, and not exhibit. I feel like I have so much more free time than usual this fall. I am SUPER EXCITED to visit friends in their studios, and discover new artists I haven’t met before.

These are some of the artists I am going to visit when the Crawl kicks off on Thursday evening, and I think you should too.

Crawl Artist’s Speak

I’m excited about our Hot Talks event tomorrow evening at Hot Art Wet City. After weeks of preparation the date is finally here. I may be as nervous as some of our speakers, but we’re all going to be okay.

Promo-collage-Hottalks

This is a collage I created to promote the event on Instagram, using images from all of the speakers. See you tomorrow evening if you happen to have a ticket.
