See you at Northern Voice

Untitled – Light painting portrait of Kirsti

I will be at Northern Voice for the next two days. It is the third year in a row I’ll be in attendance, and this year I’m involved as an assistant organizer of activities for Moosecamp. I’m hoping to revisit the meatspace mashup people graphs I did last year with Zak, take light painting portraits throughout the day, and maybe, possibly, participate as a speaker during the photocamp session – but only if Kris makes me. ๐Ÿ™‚ (I hate public speaking…)

Moleskin sketchbook

moleskin-collage-015.jpg

I have had a loose goal of creating one collage every week in my moleskin sketchbook, and I have been trying to stick to it for months. I am only now managing to make it a regular thing. I think it helps if I don’t try to rush through it in one sitting. The above collage was done over the course of last week, between gathering the first round of materials, running out of glue, buying more, and then deciding it needed small finishing touches. It doesn’t normally take so long…

The idea of working of collage within a moleskin was inspired by the lovely work of my friend Degan.

Landscapes of Vancouver – Yaletown Gallery

site4-21.jpg

A few weeks ago I was asked to help out with putting together a group show at Yaletown Gallery. The call for artists went out two weeks ago with a final deadline for entry as of last friday. On Saturday I met up with my fellow organizers to review the entries and make a final selection of work to be included in the show. It was a tough process for us to whittle the number down to only twenty but we were able to do it. I can’t wait to see how everything will look once we hang the show.

Congratulations to everyone who has been accepted and I look forward to meeting everyone at the opening.

Meeting other makers

As the crow(s) fly

On Sunday I went to meet up on Main Street with a small group of Vancouver-based etsy makers and sellers. The whole thing was arranged by the lovely Rita Leung, who went to great lengths to let many people know about the meeting using etsy’s very limited contact system. (You can only send emails one at a time, like with flickr mail.) There were ten of us altogether and most people brought along items they’d made to show and share. It was a very inspiring event for me.

Please check out their shops:

And last but not least, there is my own shop full of photo prints of holga shots and heat transfer prints on metal.

A funny story from yesterday….

Moleskin collage013

I decided to walk home from work because the weather was so lovely and it felt like spring. I cut along Kitsilano beach to see the water, and to photograph all the crows and seagulls gathered everywhere. There was an older man sitting on a bench close to the water and he had a huge flock of pigeons, gulls and crows gathered around him on the ground and flying overhead because he was feeding them popcorn. He spotted me taking pictures close by and started talking to me. First he told me a bit about himself, and then he segued into telling me all about his son, with an emphasis on how successful, handsome, and wonderful he is.

Apparently his son’s name is Richard, he works at GM Place, and he is about 6’4". He went on and on about his son, so I finally asked him, "are you trying to find a woman for your son?" He said "yes". I had to laugh. He even went so far as to tell me his address, and invited me to drop by sometime for a drink (to be prepared by his lovely wife).

I did not get the older man’s name and he refused to let me take his picture, but it made for a fun afternoon.

Utata – Iron Photographer 41

Some days are just like that...
Some days are just like that…

Untitled

These are two of the shots I submit for Utata’s Iron Photographer 41 project. The requirements for the shot were an umbrella, shot inside, and cinematic aspect ratio. The rest is left up to interpretation. I decided to shoot things and go with experimenting with different treatments in photoshop. The texture comes from the CD included with the book called Crumble.Crackle.Burn on loan from a friend.

100 Strangers

1/100 - Bill MacEwan

3/100 - Megan Cole

Brittney blogged about the 100 Strangers project on Utata’s Daily Ink a few weeks back and it got me thinking about doing this as a project myself. The challenge: Take 100 photographs of at least 100 people you don’t know. Approach a person or group of people and ask for permission to both take a photo of them and to post it to this group.

I gave myself an easy start by asking people I met at Launch Party 3 – a local networking event and a situation where most people are already expecting to be photographed. Because I was shooting with the Olympus XA loaded with 800 ISO film, I had to make use of a “studio” lighting set up someone had in one corner of the room. Lucky for me this was there, otherwise it would’ve been to dark for my camera. The above two photos are two of the four I shot that evening. I don’t think they make for particularly good portraiture, but I felt frustrated by the limitations of the Olympus XA. It won’t be what I use from now on, if I can help it.

The life on any street project is never long

I took many photos of graffiti and street art when I was in San Francisco back in October. I’d completely forgotten to upload them to flickr until now. A lot of these were taken in Clarion Alley in the Mission. I have made the rest of the set private but you can view them with this guest pass.
